Acute pain is pain that warns you that you are hurt, and lasts less than 6 months. Typically caused by damage to bone, muscle, or organs.
Back pain, whether caused by overuse, pulled muscles, bone spurs, chronic sciatica, a bulging disc, or arthritis is very painful and can be disabling. Back pain may not be completely relieved by exercise or physical therapy alone and acupuncture may offer the relief you need. Acute back pain may be due to inflammation from strained muscles or compressed nerves, not structural problems from the spine joints.
When there is an injury to the body, the body responds with an inflammatory response with increased healing mediators followed by proteins to create pain and swelling to prevent the use of the area. However, this response has a downside when the inflammation becomes excessive and reduces blood flow to the point of slowing the healing process. Chinese herbal medicines orally and topically treat inflammation and helping tissues heal effectively. Acupuncture sends a message (impulse) to the midbrain through the nervous system and proprioceptive pathways, dilating the blood vessels, the midbrain releases enkephalins, which are the body’s natural opioids, and about 1000 times more powerful than a histamine drug (such as oxycontin) to specific sites on the body, depending on where needles have been placed. Typically acupuncture will need to be repeated as the body has a “freak out” thinking that it must once again shut off the blood vessels to protect itself. Therefore repeat treatments are needed to reboot the signal strength in the brain and get this to stick, to keep the vessels open for the blood and nutrient flow, and basically just re-establishing healthy neurological homeostasis.
A person suffering from sciatica has an inflamed sciatic nerve. This nerve starts roughly at the base of the spine, travels down then branches into three paths, one along the back of the leg and then stops in your foot, another along the lateral side of the leg, and lastely a branch to the groin. Sciatic pain is difficult to treat because nerve pain does not respond well to painkillers. Sciatica can cause severe, stabbing pain and can make the patient cry out when sudden movements are made. Acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system and allowing for the body to regain its natural balance.
