The Importance of Cardiovascular Health

The number one cause of death in the United States is cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, the gold standard for finding coronary occlusions is an angiogram, which insurance companies typically do not cover unless the patient fails a treadmill test and/or has a pretty severe case of angina. Even in this case, a treadmill test can only register blood flow blockages of 70% of more. Because of this, many people are walking around with early-stage heart disease without realizing it. Occasionally symptoms may arise, including an uneasy feeling or sudden discomfort in the chest, which is fortunately short lived. If the patient tells their doctor, they will usually be given an EKG, which is pretty useless in spotting coronary blockages and will only tell the doctor if they have already had a heart attack or if they have some form of irregular heartbeat. At this point in time, cardiac testing is still being developed and is often unable to pick up heart disease in its earliest stages. The intention of Chinese Medicine is to catch these issues before they reach crisis stage, and restore normal function without the onset of severe symptoms

The patient may be told there is nothing wrong when, in fact, there is a problem. In Western medicine, an angiogram is the only sure way to know there is a problem in the early stages; but this is a somewhat risky procedure and the doctor has to have good reasons for ordering it. The only preventative procedure for mild undetected heart problems is taking an aspirin, which from a Chinese medical point of view is too simplistic.

Treating the Heart

Medical pulse diagnosis is used to determine the condition of the heart and forms the basis for the treatment plan and herbal formulas.

In the case of coronary blockage our approach is to widen the coronary arteries, clean them out, and increase blood flow to the heart.  For weak hearts the formula will include herbs to strengthen and support the heart and increase energy and circulation. Patients with heart conditions commonly experience one or more symptoms of: anxiety, fatigue, depression, or low mood, cold hands, digestive issues, and some will feel infrequent, small sensations in the chest. The healing process happens over the course of four months in most cases, with symptoms resolving along the way.

Hypertension has many possible causes; sometimes a patient will have hypertension due to more than one cause. It is a disease that can be very difficult for western medicine to treat. It is not uncommon for someone with hypertension to be on several medications, all of which have undesirable side effects.

Medical Pulse Diagnosis is the guide to our treatment strategy. Common causes are from fatty plaque build up in the cardiovascular system, or the renal system, and inflammation.

Our approach: If inflammation is present clear it, if the cardiovascular system is clogged, open the vessels to allow unobstructed flow. The severity of the condition will determine treatment duration.  As the blood pressure normalizes any medically perscribed medications are adjusted by your Medical Doctor.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common circulatory problem from narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your extremities, typically the legs. Reduced blood circulation can cause symptoms, most notably leg pain when walking, or climbing stairs, which disappear after a few minutes of rest, leg numbness or weakness, coldness in the lower leg or foot, especially when compared to the other side, sores on the lower extremities that won’t heal, hair loss on legs, slow growth of toenails, erectile dysfunction.

Our approach: scour blockage from the cardiovascular system, increase blood flow through the vessels, support and strengthen the heart and enrich blood.

I have been going to regular doctors for my problems with my blood and my digestion for over a decade. Within two weeks I saw improvement in my health since coming to Sheila
